What Does Individual Counseling Look Like?

It can be intimidating get started with therapy. You are talking to a complete stranger about some of the most intimate and personal parts of your life! The benefit of talking to someone you don’t know are as follows:

  1. Therapy is your safe space, a place to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors without fear of judgment. Everything stays confidential, and my role isn’t to judge, it’s to understand and support you as you figure things out. I often remind my clients that I get paid to help, not to look down on anyone. In fact, chances are, I’ve faced some of the same challenges myself. Like anyone, I can struggle to see my own blind spots. That’s why therapy works! It gives you the perspective and tools to keep moving forward.

  2. At Ashrise Therapy, Individual counseling is about helping YOU to rewrite your story. I’ll be here as a guide while you decide what the next chapter of your life looks like. This journey is about autonomy, it will never be “What does Andrew think I should do?” Therapy can be uncomfortable, but growth comes from learning how to lean into it. You’ll gain insight into what drives your reactions and how to use that awareness to foster deep personal transformation. Your story doesn’t end with struggle, it begins again with healing!

Is Individual Therapy Right for Me?

What to Expect in Individual Sessions

Session Length: Sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.

  1. Frequency: I suggest for my clients to start with weekly sessions in order to create a routine in sessions that promotes a balance of checking in and challenging new growth. Then from there, we will space it out to fit your needs.

  2. Confidentiality: Everything shared in therapy is confidential. As a mandatory reporter, I am required to take action if there is a threat to your safety or others, or if there are signs of abuse or neglect involving children or senior adults. If concerns arise, we will always have a conversation first, I will never jump to conclusions.   3. Client's Role: Your role in therapy is to show up ready to grow! I love it when clients come in with the readiness to grow by writing down their impressions and ideas and trying out the challenges placed at the end of each session. Therapy isn’t about me changing you, it’s about you stepping into your own growth. I’ll be here to guide and support, but the real work happens within you, both in and outside of our sessions.

  4. First Session: The first session will be a little different from the rest. It’s a time to gather information, explore goals of therapy, and getting to know each other. Depending on where you are, we may dive right into the work, or you may need space to vent and process before you feel ready to begin. Either way, my goal is to create a supportive experience where we can establish a strong foundation for our therapeutic relationship moving forward.
